Mid road trip mud bath.

Mid road trip mud bath.

The moment of truth today would be if I was able to get my reserved car for the drive from Santa Marta to Cartagena. After a tasty breakfast, we hurried to the car rental at the airport. As it generally does, everything worked out. I started off driving a little nervous and wobbly, but eventually fell into my groove. The drive went by quickly because of all the new things to look at (and because you had to pay attention to passing cars and motorbikes). We drove through a small coastal town, lots of toll-booths, passed many people selling things at traffic stops and eventually stopped for lunch and a small no frills restaurant. It was the type of place with plastic Coca-Cola branded tables/chairs and a straightforward menu (chicken, beef or steak). We did our best to order and ended up getting most of the things we thought we ordered. The one exception was my soup, which I ate despite a big bone with meat hanging off it floating inside. They laughed at us when we ordered a coffee at 2pm in the afternoon, but I explained we were tired from driving! The woman working there was super sweet and it made my day when I saw her face light up with the tip. We also had free entertainment by watching her little girls playing hide and seek.

I have a feeling I’m going to like it here! I had THE warmest welcome from the owner of the place. He showed me to my room (and carried my suitcase over his head without thinking twice). It’s a gorgeous room that is modern yet traditional, and the best part is the outdoor shower!

I was given a limeade welcome drink on my patio while the owner gave me the rundown. He gave me a phone that I can use to call them (super smart). I can also use it at any time to order food, drinks, a ride or a spa treatment. Since I was still under the weather I took a short walk to the rice fields, then just read by the pool until it was time spa treatment for the evening. On the way to the rice fields literally every person smiled or said hi to me, it was refreshing.

Equally refreshing was my dip in the pool. This place is literally in the middle of the jungle so I was started a few times by a lizard or a very large spider. As if they were reading my mind, one of the ladies working asked me if I wanted coffee by the pool. Yes please, it’s been over 24 hours since I could take down a coffee.

Then, I went off to my spa treatment- a massage, a facial and a body scrub all for under $100. It was located at the edge of the property and I relaxed to the sounds of water falling off leaves, birds in the distance and occasionally the crow of a rooster 😉 Two hours later I peeled myself off the table (because I was so relaxed and because I was sticking to the sheets) and made my way to my outdoor shower! I rinsed off the body scrub and when I came out of the shower I had a margarita and dinner waiting for me on my patio. I’m not exaggerating, the workers here go above and beyond and do it all proactively and with a smile. I can’t thank them enough! I’m just glad I have 6 more days of this 😉 Since I was able to eat my dinner, I think I’ll have enough energy for an adventure tomorrow!
